English merchant who settled in Madeira in the late 18th century, introduced Lancaster's mutual teaching, founded a Lancasterian school at his own expense and was first treasurer of the Associação Funchalense do Ensino Mútuo. He was also a founding member of the Associação Comercial do Funchal (1835) and paid for the opening of the Rua do Phelps; he died in England after 1863.
