Phelps (José)

English merchant who settled in Madeira in the late 18th century, founded a Lancasterian school at his own expense and helped establish the Associação Funchalense do Ensino Mútuo.

English merchant who came to Madeira at the end of the 18th century. He set up a school on the Lancaster system at his own expense and contributed greatly to the founding of the Associação Funchalense do Ensino Mútuo, of which he was elected treasurer. He returned to England at the beginning of the third quarter of the 19th century and died there after 1863. See Lancasterian School (Escola Lancasteriana), Page and Phelps (street).
