Rye (Secale cereale) / Centeio (Secale cereale)

An annual grass cultivated in Madeira and Porto Santo. Rye flour alone or combined with wheat flour is used to make a dark but tasty bread, and the plant's straw is used in hat making. The archipelago produces approximately 2,500 hectoliters of rye annually.
