Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) / Alface (Lactuca sativa)

A liguliflorous composite widely cultivated in Madeira's vegetable gardens. The juice obtained by transverse incisions made in the lettuce stems at the time of flowering is known as lactucarium in pharmacies and can be used in some cases as a substitute for opium. Distilled water from lettuce is used as a vehicle for certain calming potions.
