Funchal-born law graduate, writer and journalist who founded and directed the daily Jornal da Madeira in 1923 and published many books.
He was born in this city on 10 May 1898, the son of Henrique Augusto Vieira de Castro and Dona Alegria Adida Vieira de Castro. He attended the Funchal lyceum (state secondary school) and is a bachelor (bacharel, university graduate) in law of the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra).
He began his literary career early, contributing to various newspapers and, while still attending our lyceum, publishing in book form some of the writings scattered through this city’s periodical press. He has already contributed widely to many newspapers and magazines, and in Coimbra he was an editor of, and a regular contributor to, several periodicals. At the end of 1923 he launched in this city a daily newspaper entitled Jornal da Madeira, of which he is director. He has published the following volumes: Nebuloses, Funchal, 1916; Livro Extranho, Porto, 1916; Civilisados, Coimbra, 1918; A Hora Internacional e a Nacionalidade Portugueza, Coimbra, 1919; and a Europa e a Republica Portuguesa, Coimbra, 1922 (1921).
After that date he published O Mundo que finda e o mundo que começa, 1936; D. Carlos I, 1936; Limbo, 1936; Em Pé de Guerra, 1937; A Formação de Portugal, 1938; Pedra sobre Pedra, 1942; and Rumo à Vitoria, 1943.
