Vieira de Castro (Henrique Augusto)
Porto-born banker who settled in Funchal in 1893 as Bank of Portugal agent, became partner of Reid, Castro & C.ª, and was a notable promoter of local industry and philanthropist.
He is the son of Luís Lopes Vieira de Castro and Dona Carolina Cândida Vieira de Castro, and was born in the city of Porto on 24 June 1869.
Towards the end of 1893 he settled in Funchal as director of the Bank of Portugal’s agency on this island, and he is currently managing partner of the important banking house Reid, Castro & C.ª. He is an intelligent, active and enterprising merchant and industrialist. To him is owed the growth of several Madeiran industries and also the notable development of various branches of local trade (1921).
Through his charitable acts, Henrique Vieira de Castro has rendered signal services to various charitable institutions and to the poor of our island. The founding of the School of Arts and Crafts (Escola de Artes e Ofícios), intended to support destitute children, is due in large part to him.
In the articles Angústias Cemetery (volume I, page 70), Escola Elementar do Comércio (volume I, page 398), Jardim Municipal (volume II, page 182) and Misericórdias (volume II, page 372) we have already referred specifically to some of the important services that Henrique Vieira de Castro has rendered to Madeira, which he regards as his true adopted homeland (1921).

- Funchal
Where he settled in 1893.
The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. The Elucidário discusses it as a health resort with climate data and records the January 1906 disturbances, the Danish prince's visit in May 1846 and recent volcanic cones in the area.
- Porto
Portugal. His birthplace.
A Portuguese city, where the 1820 liberal revolution began and whose district is the only one denser than Funchal's. Several Madeirans studied at its medical school or Academia Politécnica, and some lived or died there. The editor of O Funchalense Liberal was hanged there, and Marítimo beat FC Porto there in 1922.
