Sardinha (Father Alfredo de Paula)
Original title: Sardinha (Padre Alfredo de Paula)
Biography of Father Alfredo de Paula Sardinha (1861–1897), Funchal-born priest, poet, journalist and orator who served several rural parishes.
He was born in Funchal on 2 April 1861 and died in the parish (freguesia) of Arco da Calheta (‘arc of Calheta’) on 23 May 1897. He studied at the Lyceum (Liceu) and the seminary (Seminário) of this city, and was ordained priest in 1885. He served as parish priest in the parishes of Santana, Faial, Fajã da Ovelha and Arco da Calheta.
He had shown a decided vocation for letters, in both prose and verse, but misfortune and illness sadly prevented him from devoting himself to sustained literary work, though much was to be expected of his undeniable talent and cultivated mind. He left various writings scattered through the newspapers, especially in A Verdade, of which he was an editor. He wrote many poems, some of which enjoyed great popularity and are still recited and sung today by some of his contemporaries.
He had remarkable gifts as an orator and in 1894 published the pamphlet Discurso recitado na sala da Associação Católica do Funchal....
