Original title: Sardinha (Dr. Manuel)
Biography of Dr Manuel Sardinha (b. 1865), Funchal physician, public-health administrator, journalist and noted solver of mathematical problems.
He was born in Funchal on 20 September 1865 and qualified as a physician and surgeon at the now defunct Medical-Surgical School (Escola Médico-Cirúrgica) of this city. He served as municipal medical officer in Fajã da Ovelha (‘the ewe’s flat’) and Ribeira Brava (‘wild river’). He was later appointed administrator of the Land Disinfection Station (Posto de Desinfecção Terrestre), run by the District General Council (Junta Geral), and is at present retired. He has contributed to various newspapers, was an editor of the Diário de Notícias and is the current director of the Correio da Madeira (1921). His contributions over several years to the Almanach Bertrand, as a solver of mathematical problems, are most valuable and have been highlighted there in a very honourable and exceptionally distinguished way for Dr Manuel Sardinha.
