The sardine (Clupea pilchardus), a fish seen chiefly in winter in Madeiran waters and caught in large numbers off stream mouths after floods.
(Clupea pilchardus). A fish of the family Clupeidae, which appears chiefly during the winter, mixed with the mackerel, the horse mackerel and other species. It is caught in large quantities off the mouths of the streams after floods. Its breeding has been observed in the rock pools of the coast.
