Boqueirão (Smaris insidiator)

The boqueirão (Smaris insidiator), a small fish once common in Madeiran waters but now rare in markets.

A small fish of the family Maenidae, caught in Madeiran waters. Once very common, it is today a rarity in the markets, and it is not a fish of great value. It is caught from the shoreline to the open sea, and from the surface down to a depth of about 150 braças (fathoms). It is sometimes seen far from land, mixed with sardines, herring, horse mackerel and mackerel.
