São Jorge (islet, point, landing place and stream)

Original title: São Jorge (Ilhéu, Ponta, Porto e Ribeira de)

Describes four coastal and inland features of São Jorge parish on Madeira's north coast: the small islet, the Ponta de São Jorge headland (the most seaward point of the north coast), the quay built at Ponta Gorda between 1904 and 1910, and the São Jorge stream, which rises near Pico Ruivo.

The small islet of São Jorge (‘St George’) lies close to the coast of the parish (freguesia) of the same name, almost opposite its landing place.

The projection on Madeira’s north coast that juts furthest out to sea is called Ponta de São Jorge (‘St George Point’) and lies on the coast of the parish of the same name. From the tip of this headland, at the spot known as the Vigia (‘lookout’), every twist and turn of the coastline can be seen, from the parish of Porto da Cruz (‘harbour of the cross’) to that of Porto Moniz (‘Moniz’s harbour’), and this village (lugar, settlement rank below a town) deserves a visit. At the spot known as Ponta Gorda (‘broad point’) a quay was built between 1904 and 1910; a footpath links it to the main road that connects the parishes of Santana (‘St Anne’) and São Jorge.

The stream rises near Pico Ruivo (‘russet peak’) and crosses the parish of São Jorge, flowing into the sea at the landing place of the same name. Its tributaries are the Canário, Grande and Lombo da Furna brooks.
