Ilha
Inhabited locality in São Jorge parish, encircled by a forking stream, once part of an entail founded in 1559 and site of a former chapel.
An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of São Jorge. There was once a small chapel there dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Piedade, built in the last quarter of the 18th century by Father Matias Jorge Jardim. The locality formed part of an entailed estate (morgadio) founded by Jorge Pinto in 1559. Its last administrator was the Azorean Laureano da Câmara Falcão, known as the morgado of Ilha (‘island’), who some decades ago sold these lands to their tenant farmers. The locality takes its name from the fact that it is encircled by the stream, which forks and then rejoins itself at a single point.
