St Anne (chapels)
Original title: Santana (Capelas de)
Lists the chapels in Madeira dedicated to Saint Anne (Santana), with their parishes, founders and dates of foundation where known, from 1607 to 1790.
The chapel of St Anne in the parish (freguesia) of São Roque (‘St Roch’) was built by Francisco Dias in 1607. Services are still held there.
In the locality (sítio) of Ribeiro Seco (‘dry brook’), in the parish of São Martinho, at the place now called Santana (‘St Anne’), Agostinho Pedro de Vasconcelos Teixeira built a chapel of this dedication in 1780, on the quinta (country estate) he owned there; its deed of endowment is dated 22 April of the same year. It still exists, as does the house that adjoined it.
A chapel of the same dedication was built in the locality of Cruz do Carvalho (‘oak cross’), in the parish of São Pedro (‘St Peter’), in 1790, by Dr António Dionísio da Silva Conde, judge of orphans (juiz dos órfãos) in Funchal.
A chapel of St Anne stands in ruins in the locality of Ribeira da Fernanda (‘Fernanda’s stream’), in the parish of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos (‘the narrows of Câmara de Lobos’). It belonged to the Cardoso entail (morgado).
In the parish of Machico, on the Quinta Santana, there is a well-preserved chapel with this patron saint. We do not know the name of its founder or the year it was built.
There was a chapel of the same dedication in the locality of Fajã do Penedo (‘boulder flat’), in the parish of Boaventura (‘good fortune’), founded in 1768 by the holder of the entail António Francisco de Caires and his wife Teresa Maria de Barros; its deed of endowment is dated 20 April of that year. According to what we were told, it was demolished shortly after 1840.
