Salt

Original title: Sal

The donataries' monopoly on selling salt in Madeira and Porto Santo, effectively ended by a 1769 order.

Under the letters of grant of Prince Henry the Navigator, only the donataries could sell salt on this island and on Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’). This privilege did not disappear when the donataries' captaincies of Madeira were turned into chief alcaideships, but it seems to have been little respected in later times. On 6 February 1769 an order was issued that the representative (procurador) of the Marquis of Castelo Melhor should not be obliged to supply the population with salt, and that anyone might unload and sell this commodity, as had been the practice before.
