Saião

Saião, common Madeiran succulents (Sempervivum glutinosum and S. arboreum) used in folk remedies and to toughen fishing lines.

The name of Sempervivum glutinosum, a sticky subshrubby member of the Crassulaceae, very common in Madeira. The juice of this plant is used internally and externally to treat injuries or wounds caused by falls, etc. It also serves to make the lines fishermen use tougher and more durable. There is another saião, S. arboreum, which is cultivated in gardens. The juice of the leaves of this species is recommended for corns.
