D. Afonso de Portugal, 1st Count of Vimioso, bought the captaincy of Machico in 1549 and became its 6th donatary; he was captured at Alcácer Quibir and died a captive in Africa.
He was the 1st Count of Vimioso and fought at the battle of Alcácer Quibir, where he was taken prisoner. In 1549, with the authorisation of King John III, he bought the captaincy of Machico from António da Silveira, becoming its 6th donatary (donatário). He died in Africa, a captive of the Moors, but outlived his son Dom Francisco de Portugal.
