Portugal (Dom Francisco de)

Original title: Portugal (D. Francisco de)

D. Francisco de Portugal, 2nd Count of Vimioso and 7th donatary of Machico, fought at Alcácer Quibir, supported the Prior of Crato and died at the naval battle of Vila Franca do Campo in 1582.

Portugal (Dom Francisco de)

He fought alongside his father at the battle of Alcácer Quibir, where he was wounded and taken prisoner. Having managed to return to his homeland, he took the side of the Prior of Crato, to whom he rendered notable services, and died gloriously at the famous naval battle of Vila Franca do Campo on 26 July 1582. He was the 7th donatary (donatário) of Machico and 2nd Count of Vimioso, because only long after the disaster of Alcácer Quibir was it learnt that Dom Afonso de Portugal had not died in the battle but was a prisoner of the Moors in Africa. Philip II gave the captaincy of Machico to Tristão Vaz da Veiga while the 2nd Count of Vimioso was still alive.
