King of Portugal who granted Machico to António da Silveira in 1542 and authorised the 1549 sale of the Machico captaincy. His new taxes funded fortification works in Madeira, and he is said to have obtained the archdiocese of Funchal as a favour to his kinsman D. Martinho de Portugal.
