Entry on the Almeida surname in Madeira, traced to Constança Rodrigues, wife of João Gonçalves Zargo, and to Amador de Almeida, granted arms in 1538.

The wife of João Gonçalves Zarco, Constança Rodrigues,’ says Dr Álvaro de Azevedo, ‘is called de Sá by some and de Almeida by others; and indeed the house of Abrantes, which springs from the same ancestry, bears the arms of the Almeidas. After Constança Rodrigues, the first person we find with this surname is Amador de Almeida, to whom John III granted a coat of arms in 1538’.
