Powder magazine

Original title: Paiol

The military powder magazine of Funchal, built in 1825 to replace storage of gunpowder in the fortress of São João do Pico.

Map: Madeira (3)

The military powder magazine was built in 1825; the works had been estimated in 1819 at 5,358,000 réis (old Portuguese money of account; 1$000 = 1,000 réis, 1:000$000 = one conto = 1,000,000 réis). Above the door are the royal arms, and beneath them the date 1825.

Before the present magazine was built, gunpowder was stored in the Fort of São João do Pico (St John the Baptist of the Pico).

The Caminho do Paiol (‘powder magazine’) was much improved in 1815, the works being carried out directly by the Council.
