Pais (Rui)
Rui Pais was a companion of João Gonçalves Zargo in the discovery of Madeira, sent ashore to reconnoitre at Machico.
He was one of the companions of João Gonçalves Zarco in the discovery of this archipelago. Referring to the first landing, made at Machico, Gaspar Frutuoso says ‘that as soon as dawn broke the next day the captain sent a ship’s boat ashore, and put Ruy Paes in charge of it, that he should go and see the lie and situation of the land...’
