Map: Madeira (1)

– This monument, which we have already discussed at some length (I-302), never rose above its foundations and was demolished on 1 September 1823. On that occasion a record (auto) was drawn up, stating that the following had been found in the foundations: a bottle containing seven issues of O Patriota Funchalense (‘The Funchal Patriot’); a manuscript recounting the history of the monument; and a stone box holding a silver one, which contained the record describing the ceremony of laying the monument’s foundation stone, together with a blue and white purse containing some silver coins and a medal of the same metal.

Chronology
  • The foundations of the unfinished Constitution monument in Funchal were demolished by order of the governor, and its foundation deposit was recorded.
