Língua cervina
The Madeiran fern called língua cervina, Elaphoglossum squamosum, used locally as a cough remedy, distinct from the Portuguese língua cervina, Scolopendrium vulgare.
The fern that Madeirans call by this name is Elaphoglossum squamosum, distinguished by its elongated fronds covered with rust-coloured or almost black scales. This species grows at Porto da Cruz, Boa Ventura, Lamaceiros, etc., and is widely used in Madeira as a cough remedy. The fern known in Portugal as língua cervina is Scolopendrium vulgare, a species that also occurs in Madeira but is quite rare.
