Lapa da Cadela (cave)

Original title: Lapa da Cadela (Furna da)

A shallow cave near Pico Ruivo used as an overnight shelter by climbers, near which the Tourism Delegation built a rest house in 1940.

Map: Madeira (3)

This is a cave (furna) close to Pico (‘peak’) Ruivo (‘russet’), where people visiting the mountain usually spend the night. It is wide but shallow, so it gives those who shelter in it little protection from the winds and rain that come from the direction of Curral das Freiras (‘nuns’ fold’). It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the cave to the summit of the peak.

In 1940 the Tourism Delegation (Delegação de Turismo) had a ‘pousada’ (rest house) built in its vicinity to shelter and rest those who make the ascent of that height. See Ruivo (peak).

Chronology
