Heredia (family)
Original title: Heredia
Entry on the Herédia family of Madeira, founded by the Spanish nobleman D. Antonio Herédia, who came to the island in 1602 with the Castilian garrison and later governed the archipelago in the governor's absence. The family absorbed the Britos entail based at Ribeira Brava.
The Spanish fidalgo (nobleman of the lesser nobility) Dom Antonio Herédia served in the army that entered Portugal under the command of the Duke of Alba in 1580. In 1602 he came to Madeira as captain of the Company of the Castilian Garrison (Companhia do Presídio Castelhano), later becoming commander of that garrison, and afterwards he governed the whole archipelago in the absence of the governor in office. He was the founder of the Herédia family in Madeira, whose last representatives were Francisco Correia Herédia, António Correia Herédia and Francisco Correia Herédia, Viscount of Ribeira Brava (see those entries). Dom Antonio Herédia and his descendants married into the most distinguished Madeiran families. The Heredia family absorbed the important entailed estate (morgadio) of the Britos, whose principal seat was in the parish (freguesia) of Ribeira Brava, at the chantry (capela) of Our Lady of the Presentation (Nossa Senhora da Apresentação), in the locality (sítio) that still bears this name today. Attached to it was a large manor house, one of the biggest residences outside Funchal. House and chapel were demolished long ago.

- Apresentação
Ribeira Brava. Locality still named after the chapel, site of the demolished Herédia manor house.
Apresentação is a locality in Ribeira Brava named after the former chapel of Nossa Senhora da Apresentação at Lombo da Apresentação. The chapel was founded in 1524 and later became part of the Heredia entail. The locality was also the site of the demolished Herédia manor house.
- Chapel of the Presentation of Our Lady
Ribeira Brava. Chapel, now demolished, that was the seat of the Britos entail.
Former chapel in Ribeira Brava parish, founded in 1524 and now demolished. It was the seat of the Britos entail and gave its name to the Lombo da Apresentação.
- Funchal
Mentioned as comparison: the manor was one of the largest residences outside Funchal.
The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. The Elucidário discusses it as a health resort with climate data and records the January 1906 disturbances, the Danish prince's visit in May 1846 and recent volcanic cones in the area.
- Portugal
Country entered by the Duke of Alba's army in 1580.
Portugal, the mother country of Madeira. The Elucidário notes that artillery detachments were sent from the mainland to garrison Madeira before 1877, that Madeira was linked to Portugal by telegraph cable in 1874, and that woad and gifts of honey were formerly sent there from the island. Mainland oranges and olives are compared favourably with those of Madeira and Porto Santo.
- Ribeira Brava
Parish where the Britos entail had its principal seat.
Ribeira Brava is one of Madeira's oldest parishes, named after its violent stream, with a town, port and quay. The Elucidário covers its collegiate church and its paintings, its Franciscan convent and chapels, and its São Pedro festival with a boat and sword dance. It also records riots against the metric system and deaths when troops fired on the people during the 1884 election.
