Biography of Jordão Apolinário de Freitas (born Funchal, 1866), trained in theology and medicine, director of the Ajuda public library in Lisbon and a prolific historical researcher. The entry lists his many publications, including a study on when Madeira was discovered.
Life and works
He was born in this city on 23 July 1866, the son of Luís M. de Freitas and Dona Ana Fortunata de Sousa e Freitas. After completing the theology course at the seminary (Seminário) of this diocese, he took the course of the Funchal Medical-Surgical School (Escola Médico-cirúrgica do Funchal). He settled in Lisbon many years ago, and there he at present (1921) holds the post of director of the Ajuda public library, having previously been librarian of the Geographical Society (Sociedade de Geografia). He has devoted himself especially to historical research, and his literary output in books and pamphlets is already considerable, besides his contributions to various reviews and newspapers.

The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically.
