Freitas (José Vicente de)
Biography of José Vicente de Freitas (b. 1869), an infantry officer from Calheta who was briefly civil governor of Funchal in 1915, deputy for Madeira and author of drawing textbooks, later mayor of Lisbon and head of government.
He was born in Calheta (‘small cove’) on 22 January 1869 and belongs to an old family of that town (vila). He is a lieutenant-colonel of infantry and served in the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps that fought in France. (1921)
He was appointed civil governor of this district by decree of 9 February 1915, took office on the 22nd of the same month and served until 15 May of that year. On 28 April 1918 he was elected deputy for Madeira.
He published the following works:
- Atlas de desenho, geometria descritiva e noções de arte, Lisboa 1908
- Atlas de desenho, organizado em harmonia com os programmas de 1905, Lisboa, 1908, 2 volumes, the first for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd forms and the second for the 4th and 5th forms of the lyceums
- Compendio de Desenho para a instrução primaria, Lisboa, 1903, 2 volumes, the first for the 1st and 2nd forms and the second for the 3rd and 4th
- Roteiro e planta de Lisboa on a scale of 1/7,500, 1906 edition
- and Livro de Leitura para 4ª. classe das escolas primarias, in collaboration with F. Veyrier, Lisboa, 1910.
He was president of the Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal) of Lisbon and head of the government for some years.

Birthplace of Freitas and seat of his old family.
Calheta is a town, parish and municipality on Madeira's south-west coast and one of the island's oldest settlements. The Elucidário covers its name, early settlers such as Pedro Berenguer, its church and many chapels, including one of a former Franciscan convent, and the 1834 riot.
