Water-powered sawmills
Original title: Serras de Água
Water-powered sawmills built on Madeira's larger streams to cut timber, much of it for export; the entry points to other articles and a pamphlet on their legislation.
In the article on the parish (freguesia) of Serra de Água (‘water sawmill’) and in the article Timber (II-373) we have already dealt with the ‘machines’ or ‘mills’ built on the banks of the most abundant streams and used for sawing timber, especially timber destined for export to mainland Portugal and abroad. Interesting information on this subject, particularly on the legislation that regulated it, is given in a pamphlet, Serras de Agua, by the distinguished Madeiran Dr Jordão Apolinário de Freitas.
