This is a noble family surname. Gonçalo Denis da Silva founded the chapel of the Almas Pobres (Poor Souls in Purgatory) in Santa Maria Maior (‘St Mary Major’), shortly after the foundation of the chantry (capela) of São Paulo (St Paul the Apostle). Jordão de Freitas da Silva, who lived in Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’) in 1618, was the grandson of Jordão de Freitas, of the household of the Infante Diogo, Duke of Viseu.
