Constituição (square)
Original title: Constituição (Praça da)
A former square in Funchal, earlier called Passeio Público, renamed Praça da Constituição after the liberal constitution was proclaimed there on 28 January 1821. It became Praça da República in 1911 and disappeared in 1914 when the Avenida Oeste (now Avenida Dr. Manuel de Arriaga) was built.
This square bore this name from 28 January 1821, because the constitution – that is, the liberal principles of 1820 – was proclaimed there on that day. Before then it was known as the Passeio Público, a name that was still often given to it in our own day.
The Praça da Constituição (‘Constitution Square’) was renamed Praça da República in 1911, and it disappeared in 1914, when construction began on the Avenida Oeste, today the Avenida do Dr. Manuel de Arriaga, which also takes in the site of the old Jardim Pequeno (‘small garden’).
The Praça da Constituição was a shady enclosure where the regimental band used to play in former times. It had fine specimens of Indian fig trees, magnolias, sementeiras and grevilleas.
