Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora)

The North American magnolia tree, widely grown in Funchal's quintas and gardens; the name is also applied locally to Osmanthus fragrans and to the carocha of Camacha gardens.

A North American tree, widely grown in the quintas and gardens of Funchal. It flowers in May and June.

Madeirans also give the name magnolia to Osmanthus fragrans, a shrub of the family Oleaceae native to Japan, which produces small, fragrant white flowers.

The carocha of the gardens of Camacha and other places belongs to the genus Magnolia and the family Magnoliaceae, and is much prized for its scent.
