Mushrooms

Original title: Cogumelos

Overview of Madeira's fungi: 340 species recorded, 31 endemic, some edible, though islanders rarely eat them and often destroy them as witches' work.

Some 340 species of Madeiran mushrooms or fungi have been identified, 31 of which have not yet been found in any other region of the globe. Some of these species are edible, such as Ammanita vaginata, Lactarius deliciosus, Cantharellus cibarius, Psaliotta campestris (champignon de couche), Boletus edulis, B. bovinus, etc. Madeirans are not in the habit of eating mushrooms, and in the countryside people often destroy them, believing them to be the work of witches.
