Entry on the onion, widely grown in Madeira, covering its medicinal uses and exports to Demerara and the British West Indies in 1911–14.

A member of the lily family native to Turkestan, widely grown in Madeira.

Madeirans call the young plants and the seeds cebolinho. Besides its culinary uses, the onion is used in medicine: raw and mixed with cold milk it can serve in the treatment of dropsy, and boiled or roasted as a poultice in the treatment of neuralgia and certain tumours. Madeira exported 1,171,678 kg of onions in 1911, 899,895 kg in 1912, 874,385 kg in 1913 and 861,697 in 1914. The exports go almost exclusively to Demerara and the British West Indies.
