Biography of Dr João Catanho de Meneses, lawyer born in Faial, Madeira, deputy for Madeira and Minister of Justice in 1915.
He was born in the parish (freguesia) of Faial on 17 April 1854 and in 1874 enrolled in the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra), completing the course in 1879. He then moved to Lisbon, where he set up practice as a lawyer. He represented Madeira in the Cortes (Portuguese parliament) in the legislatures of 1890, 1897–1899, 1900 and 1905–1906. At that time he belonged to the Progressive Party, but after the establishment of republican institutions in the country he joined the Democratic Party, becoming Minister of Justice in 1915 in the government headed by Dr José de Castro. He left the government when Germany declared war on Portugal.

Santana. Birthplace of Catanho de Meneses.
Faial is a north-coast parish of Santana municipality created in 1550, whose mountain springs feed the Levada da Serra. It contains Chícharos and the Diferença chapel, owns the eastern part of Pico Ruivo, and is noted for cheese-making and columnar basalt.

The University of Coimbra, in mainland Portugal, was supported by Madeira through tithes and attended by many Madeirans. Several of them graduated there, mostly in law, and others, such as António da Gama and Vitúrio Lopes Rocha, also taught there. Júlio Augusto Henriques held its chair of botany.
