Castro (Dr José de)
Original title: Castro (Dr. José de)
José de Castro, a politician who later became prime minister, stayed in Madeira from 1884 to 1885. He defended the republicans prosecuted after the Ribeira Brava events of 1884 and wrote a pamphlet about the case.
This well-known politician, who only a few years ago was President of the Council of Ministers, stayed in Madeira from 8 October 1884 until 2 June 1885. He was one of the defence counsel for the republicans prosecuted in the judicial district (comarca) of Ponta do Sol (‘point of the sun’) over the events that took place in Ribeira Brava (‘wild river’) on 29 July 1884, which resulted in the deaths of several local people. He wrote a pamphlet recounting these events, entitled As Victimas d’ElRey, Historia dos processos movidos contra os perseguidos politicos da ilha da Madeira, desde 29 de junho de 1884 ate o ano de 1885.
