Meneses (Dom João de)
Original title: Meneses (D. João de)
Governor-general of Madeira from 1634 who later fled Spanish captivity to serve D. João IV in the Restoration wars.
He was Governor-General of Madeira, taking office in January 1634. He distinguished himself in the wars of the Restoration and was Governor of Porto.
Dr Rodrigues de Azevedo says of him that he was a secret but steadfast enemy of the rule of the Philips. So much so that, being in Madrid at the time of the revolution of 1 December 1640 in Lisbon, he fled towards that city, but was arrested in Burgos. After five years he managed to escape and entered the service of John IV. He died in Holland in 1649.
