Braga (Teófilo)

Original title: Braga (Teofilo)

Entry on the Portuguese writer Teófilo Braga, noting his chapter on Madeiran court poets in 'Poetas Palacianos' and the letters from Álvaro Rodrigues de Azevedo published in his 'Quarenta anos de vida literaria'.

Braga (Teófilo)

In his book Poetas Palacianos, this illustrious writer devotes a chapter to this archipelago, which he entitled Cyclo Poético da ilha da Madeira. In it he mentions the Madeiran poets whose compositions appear in the ‘General Songbook’ (Cancioneiro Geral) of Garcia de Resende. This chapter is transcribed, with learned commentary, on p. 765 ff. of the ‘Longing for the Homeland’ (Saudades da Terra), from the authoritative pen of Dr Álvaro Rodrigues de Azevedo.

The same author’s work Quarenta anos de vida literaria contains, on pp. 109–118, twelve letters from the illustrious annotator of the Saudades. They deal with the publication of that work and of the Romanceiro e Cancioneiro da Madeira, and contain very interesting material for the literary history of this island.
