Braga (Marcos de)

Marcos de Braga, early settler famed in chronicles for immense strength and bravery, as was his son of the same name.

The old Madeiran chronicles speak of Marcos de Braga, praising the feats of courage and valour he performed thanks to his extraordinary physical strength. He gave great proof of this strength on many occasions, and Gaspar Frutuoso cites several curious examples of it. This chronicler says that Marcos de Braga ‘was so hairy that even the backs of his nails were covered with hair, and his face right up to his eyes...’. A son of his of the same name inherited his father’s valour and likewise performed several acts of great bravery and courage, which Frutuoso did not forget to record.
