Flowers of Madeira

Original title: Flores da Madeira

Anthology of about a hundred poems by contemporary Madeiran poets, published in two volumes in 1871 and 1872 by José Leite Monteiro and Alfredo César de Oliveira.

Dr José Leite Monteiro and Canon Alfredo César de Oliveira (see those entries) published two volumes, of 210 and 190 pages, in 1871 and 1872, in which they collected about a hundred poems by Madeiran poets of their own day, under the title ‘Flowers of Madeira’ (Flores da Madeira). This collection, a valuable resource for the study of our literature, earned the highest praise from the eminent writer Teófilo Braga in an article reprinted in no. 5 of the newspaper A lâmpada, which was published in this city in 1872.

Chronology
  • The two volumes of the anthology Flores da Madeira were published.
  • Cónego Alfredo César de Oliveira founded the periodical A Lâmpada in Funchal, which reprinted Teófilo Braga's review of Flores da Madeira.
