Original title: Úzel (Barão de)

Biographical entry on Luís Alexandre Ribeiro Mendonça, Baron of Úzel (1839–1903), a Funchal-born civil servant, lyceum teacher and man of letters who wrote in Portuguese and French.

Luís Alexandre Ribeiro Mendonça, Baron of Úzel, was born in this city in 1839 and died on 2 June 1903. He was the son of Marcelino Ribeiro de Mendonça, whom we discussed on page 197 of this volume, and he held the posts of chief officer of a department of the civil government building (Governo Civil) and teacher at our Lyceum (Liceu). He had a thorough knowledge of the French and English languages, and left some unpublished compositions in prose and verse in the former. He was a distinguished man of letters, and many of his writings are scattered through the newspapers. Some of his compositions are to be found in the ‘Flowers of Madeira’ (Flores da Madeira).
