Bispo (street)
Original title: Bispo (Rua do)
Former name of Rua de Gomes Freire in Funchal, named after the bishops' residence there; notes its buildings.
The former name of the present Rua de Gomes Freire. The name comes from the fact that the prelates of Funchal had their official residence in it. The Bishop’s Palace (Paço Episcopal) (see that entry) has housed our lyceum (state secondary school) since January 1914. In this street stands the old manor house of the Ornelas family, whose present representative is Councillor (conselheiro, honorary title of the royal council) Aires de Ornelas e Vasconcelos; it was built in the last quarter of the 17th century by Aires de Ornelas, holder of the entail (morgado). The important and flourishing mutual-aid society 4 de Setembro de 1863 (see that entry) also has its headquarters here. The chapel of São Luís (St Louis) (see that entry) is likewise in this street.
