Garfish (Belone vulgaris)
Original title: Agulha. (Belone vulgaris)
The garfish, an eel-shaped migratory fish passing through Madeiran waters, of little value as food.
A teleost fish of the suborder Malacopterygii, family Scombresocidae, which passes through Madeiran waters. Its body is eel-shaped, and it can reach at most 1 metre in length.
It is often seen in the company of the mackerel (cavala) and other migratory fish, but it is not a common species in the markets. Its dry, tough flesh does not recommend it as a delicate food. See Peixe Agulha.
