The Convento de São Francisco was one of the four Franciscan friaries in Madeira. It was founded in the town in 1473 after the friars' first settlement at São João, secularised in 1834 and demolished in the 1860s. Its site, once chosen for a new town hall that was never built, became the Jardim Municipal and neighbouring streets.
