Capela do Corpo Santo
Santa Maria Maior · Funchal
Parish of Santa Maria Maior, municipality of Funchal, Madeira
The Capela do Corpo Santo is a fifteenth-century chapel in Funchal, much altered over time and among the oldest in the diocese. It was built by seafarers and dedicated to their patron São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, known as Corpo Santo. It housed a fishermen's mutual-aid confraternity, holds mid-sixteenth-century Portuguese paintings and marked the city's old eastern limit.
