Cebola (Allium cepa)

A lily native to Turkestan, widely cultivated in Madeira.

The young plants and the seeds are called 'cebollinho' by the Madeirans. In addition to its culinary uses, onions are used in medicine, being able to be consumed raw and mixed with cold milk in the treatment of dropsy, and cooked or roasted as a poultice in the treatment of neuralgia and certain tumors. Madeira exported 1,171,678 kg of onions in 1911, 899,895 kg in 1912, 874,385 kg in 1913, and 861,697 kg in 1914. The export is almost exclusively to Demerara and the English Antilles.
