Caramelo

Certain fragments of fossil corals of the genus Danaia and others, found in the limestone deposits of Porto Santo, are thus called. The 'caramelo', consisting of calcium carbonate, was used to combat the acidity of wines, and also in the preparation of fizzy drinks, such as lemonades, mineral water from Porto Santo, etc.
