Gaiado (Thynnus pelamys)
A fish of the Escombrida family, passing through Madeira, especially during the summer and autumn. It is very abundant in certain years and is generally consumed after being salted and dried in the sun. It is caught with a line and, like other species of the Thynnus genus, is used for the preparation of the so-called tuna preserve, which Madeira exports on a large scale to Portugal.
The gaiado is also known by the name bonito in some parts of Portugal.
