Boal do Porto Santo

Note distinguishing the Porto Santo Boal from other Boal grapes, suggesting the differences may be due only to climate or soil.

It differs from the preceding variety in having more cottony leaves, lobes almost always acuminate and more closed petiolar sinuses; and from the Boal da Madeira in having soft or slightly firm berries, ovate or sub-globose. The differences between the Madeiran Boal and that of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) may perhaps be due simply to the influence of climate or soil, and the two varieties should perhaps be identified as one.
