Távora (Dom Fernando de)
Original title: Távora (D. Fernando de)
Biography of D. Fernando de Távora, Dominican theologian and fifth bishop of Funchal (appointed 1569, confirmed 1570), who governed the diocese through vicars-general without ever coming to Madeira and resigned in 1573.
He was the 5th bishop of this diocese, confirmed by Pope Pius V in the consistory of 14 November 1570.
He was a native of Santarém, the son of Fernão Cardoso and Dona Filipa de Brito, who belonged to the noblest and most distinguished families of that town (vila).
After taking his doctorate in theology at the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra), he entered the Order of St Dominic, in which he held important offices. He was a renowned preacher in his day and enjoyed a reputation as a man of rare talent and vast learning. He wrote a book of commentaries on the Gospel of St John and other works, which remained unpublished.
He enjoyed the particular esteem of King Sebastian, who in 1569 appointed him prelate of this diocese. He exercised the office through his vicars-general and never came to Madeira, out of the fear that the ocean crossing inspired in him. We know of no noteworthy event that marked his episcopal administration here.
Recognising that he could not take personal charge of his bishopric, he resigned the mitre in 1573 and was then appointed almoner (esmoler) to King Sebastian. He died in 1577 and was buried in the convent of São Domingos in Lisbon.
