Vicar general

Original title: Vigário Geral

The office of vicar general of the diocese of Funchal, created in 1570 by royal charter of King Sebastião.

Although the diocese of Funchal dates from 1514, the post of vicar general of the bishopric was created only in 1570. It was the royal decree (alvará régio) of King Sebastian of 30 August of that year that authorised Bishop Dom Jorge de Lemos to establish that ecclesiastical office, for which the same decree fixed an annual salary of fifty thousand réis.
